Here are a few pics of some of the things I made in Celie’s pre-conference class on PMC Sterling. For the most part I used dry to dry construction techniques, in addition I used molds and hand carving for the branches. Keum Boo for the gold. I also used Celies ring making technique, and her fabulous tear away technique for the texture plates.
I learned a LOT of different things in Celie’s class. I’ll post more on them later, so stay tuned.
First and foremost one of the things I learned was that I that I need to narrow my focus a little when it comes to my designs. Big problem for a Gemini like me. But seeing the variety of things that I made with ONLY ONE of her texture plates reminds I can do this. It also reminded of working in a series. Last year I took a class with Micheal David Sturlin which this concept came up. Intellectually somehow I feel that working in a series can be limiting but in his class, and now in Celie’s, I think that it’s probably not limiting at all. It can be freeing. By limiting the choices of textures I can focus on structure, techniques and how it relates to the texture. While I probably would never only use one texture in my designs, the approach is something I will strive to use in the future.
Patrik,
The rings are lovely and judging from these results you certainly understood what I was trying to get across in the class about the nature of this new material; The organic, free form style of these rings is exactly what I’ve been so passionate about since starting to work in the Sterling. It begs to be worked this way.
The narrowed focus you describe is a good notion given our overwhelmingly busy lives; isolating one theme or idea and riffing on it, seeing its different possibilities. That describes the way I work, as well.
That tear away texture, that arcane bit of ancient text, is one of my favorite textures, too!
Nice to know you can keum-boo on the Sterling PMC without depletion gilding, isn’t it?
Celie
Thanks so much for your kind words about my work 🙂 Yes I love the new PMC Sterling. Among the many things I loved about your class, I really connected with your idea of making rough cracked organic edges. Now with PMC Sterling we can create that look without sacrificing strength.
As for the keum-boo. WOW! I do LOVE not having to depletion guild PMC Sterling! Also, many thanks to you, I have applied Aura 22 directly to the newly fired PMC Sterling with great results as well.
I’m also rediscovering tear-away technique. I know that the Scupley III formula has changed and we are looking for an alternative. Time for me to get into the studio and do some experiments!
Great work Patrik! Would love to take one of Celie’s classes one day, as well as one of your classes offered. Again, great job! KENJI
Your rings turned out beautiful Patrik! It sure was an awesome class!
