Materials : Polymer Clay, shoe polish
Hot technique or tip: If something you made doesn’t look fabulous, it’s okay to discard it. When students comes to me with something that didn’t turn out well and asks me how they can make it work, I tell them they can make it work by using it as information for what doesn’t work. Now throw it away or recycle the materials in it if possible and use what you learned from what didn’t work to make something that you’re proud to put into the world.
Favorite tool: Dockyard carving tools. I use them so much I don’t even bother putting them in the cup on my work surface that holds the tools I use constantly. Actually, I don’t put anything back into the cup, since I work in sloth and squalor, but that’s another matter …
Biography: Author of the book Ancient Modern: Polymer Clay and Wire Jewelry, as well as two DVD’s on polymer clay and wire jewelry, and a contributing editor to Step by Step Wire Jewelry magazine. Pictures of my work are in a lot of books, but I’m too disorganized to keep count.
