Lost wax casting Day 1

Waxes for casting
Patrik Kusek

Spent the day yesterday at The Crucible in Oakland, CA. learning about lost wax casting. I’ve taken several classes at The Crucible, all of them great, but this one has been fantastic so far. Day one of this two day casting intensive was was such a great reminder of how effortless some teachers can make it look. We learned a lot and it was great to really get hands on experience. I have plenty of theory and a big void in practical hands on experience. We spent the majority of the day creating with wax. SO FUN! The process for me seemed very familiar to working with metal clay, primarily because I do a lot of carving in my designs. The material reacted very differently than clay, I had to “relearn” how to carve the designs I wanted. However, our wonderful instructor Kim Emilianowicz was there to help us out. I highly recommend taking a class with Kim. She is extremely knowledgeable and has an approachable, enthusiastic teaching style. Which I love. The perfect balance of information, working time and just plain fun! Here are some pics of the waxes we made. Tomorrow we’ll melt some silver and do the pour! It’s going to be an exciting day!
