Here is a quick video of how I roll snakes. The best way to learn how to roll snakes is to practice. Practice, practice, practice. If you are having trouble, then practice rolling snakes using polymer clay until you have mastered the process. Then switch to metal clay. For my method, my fingertips never leave the work surface. I position the snake roller between my fingers and use my index finger to press down on the snake roller. This method keeps the distance between the snake roller and and work surface consistent. The snake roller is secured with my fingers instead of free floating. It’s much easier to control this way.

Side view of snake roller, notice that the plastic is suspended with my fingers and the tips of my fingers are touching the work surface. Sliding my fingers back and forth on the work surface with give me better control and more consistent sizing.
